Tambola, also known as Housie, is an incredibly popular game in India, and for good reason. It's easy to learn and fun for all ages. If you're a beginner, this guide will quickly get you up to speed on the essential rules of the game.

The Tambola Ticket

Your main tool in the game is the Tambola ticket. Each ticket has 15 numbers, arranged in a 3x9 grid. The numbers range from 1 to 90. Each of the three horizontal lines on your ticket has 5 numbers.

The Role of the Caller

One person, the caller, is responsible for running the game. They have a set of numbers from 1 to 90. The caller draws one number at a time and announces it to the players. They also have a board to keep track of all the numbers that have been called out.

How to Play

  1. Get Your Ticket: Each player starts with at least one ticket.
  2. Listen for Numbers: The caller will announce numbers one by one.
  3. Mark Your Ticket: If a number called by the host is on your ticket, you must strike it off.
  4. Claim a Dividend: When you complete a specific winning pattern (a "dividend"), you must immediately announce it to claim your prize.

What are Dividends?

Dividends are the winning combinations in Tambola. Here are the most common ones every beginner should know:

  • Early Five: Be the first to strike off any five numbers on your ticket.
  • Four Corners: Strike off the four numbers located at the corners of your ticket (the first and last numbers of the top and bottom rows).
  • Top Line, Middle Line, Bottom Line: Be the first to strike off all five numbers in any single horizontal row. Each line is a separate dividend.
  • Full House: This is the grand prize! You win the Full House when you are the first player to strike off all 15 numbers on your ticket.

The Most Important Rule: Claiming

When you achieve a dividend, you must claim it immediately by shouting "Tambola!" or "Housie!" before the caller announces the next number. If you're late, you lose your claim. The caller will then verify your ticket. If the claim is correct, you win the prize. If it's a false claim (a "bogey"), your ticket may be disqualified. In online games, this is all handled automatically, making it much easier for beginners.

Now you know the basics! Tambola is a game of luck and paying attention. So grab a ticket, listen carefully, and may the numbers be in your favor!
